humanitarian principles Meet Monica, Female Food Hero

The above video clip was recorded in our Washington D.C office, where Monica Maigari, a finalist in Nigeria’s Female Food Hero contest, was helping Oxfam lobby Congress on U.S. legislation earlier in March to improve global humanitarian response through empowering local actors to better prepare and react to future disasters.

Oxfam’s Female Food Heroes are women who are working to build a movement for good food – food that is grown well and shared fairly. Female Food Heroes champion the role of female farmers in nations where women are viewed as unequal to men and do not have the same rights as men in food production and agriculture. Gender roles and relationships influence the division of work, the use of resources and the sharing of the benefits of food production between women and men throughout the world. The ultimate goal of the Female Food Heroes program is to contribute to wider recognition of small-scale women food producers through awarding, acknowledging and celebrating their efforts in agriculture.

Female Food Heroes initiatives aimed at raising the profile and supporting female farmers currently exist in Armenia, Bolivia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Georgia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Russia, Tajikistan, Tanzania and Timor-Leste.
